Reduce Risk of Stroke by 12-13%

STOCKHOLM – A new study published in the journal, Stroke, suggests that eating low fat dairy products can reduce your risk of stroke.

The article was based on a study conducted at the Karolinska Institute with a total of 74,961 adults between the ages of 45-83 years old. The participants who ate the low fat dairy food had a 12-13% less risk of a stroke than those that ate high fat dairy foods.

According to lead researcher, Susanna Larsson, Ph.D., “this is the largest study to date to examine the association between consumption of total, low-fat, full-fat and specific dairy foods and the risk of stroke in adult men and women.”

The researchers believe that the reduced risk is a result of the vitamins and minerals the low fat dairy foods contain such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamin D.
If you’d like to reduce your risk of stroke, you might want to consider making low fat dairy foods a regular part of your diet.

Multi Vitamins May Protect Against Colon Cancer

Studies show supplements along with a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables may protect against cancer

By Ragesoss, via Wikimedia Commons

RIYAHD, SAUDI ARABIA – A study conducted by researchers at the College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Saud University and published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology indicates that vitamin and mineral supplementation can lower the risk of developing precancerous colon cancer lesions by up to 84%.

The researchers presented some background by explaining that colon cancer is frequently a consequence of persistent oxidative stress, leading to DNA damage and mutations in cancer-related genes, and a cycle of cell death and regeneration. The body’s principal defenses against this are antioxidant enzymes which are the main scavengers of free radicals.

The researchers also note that studies on diet and colon cancer provide consistent evidence that the consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with a lower risk of colon cancer. However, there has been little specificity in identifying a specific cause and effect result.

So, the researchers’ objective in this study was to show that including vitamin and mineral supplements in a regular diet could reduce cancer risk and protect against carcinogenesis.

In the study the researchers used rats which have a similarity to human biology regarding colon cancer. Some rats were provided supplementation in their water and some weren’t. Measurements were periodically taken and there was a significant result. The rats that were provided the supplementation were able to fight off pre-tumor lesions even after being exposed to carcinogens while the rats without supplementation had a high rate of precancerous growths.

Some of the vitamins and minerals in the supplements give to the rats included Vitamins C, E, B6, B12, D A, E, as well as calcium and zinc.

The researchers concluded that although vitamin and mineral supplements are abundant in various foods, adequate amounts of these dietary nutrients are generally not met, and therefore, supplementation is required. Because some vitamins are not stored in the body, supplements are needed to prevent a number of chronic diseases, like cancer.

So, regular supplements of multivitamins and minerals could reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Nutrients That Affect Energy Metabolism

Calcium and vitamin D are essential for energy metabolism

By Stefan Kühn, via Wikimedia Commons

PERTH, AUSTRALIA – In a new study that was reported on in Obesity Reviews, researchers at Curtin University researchers have concluded that calcium and vitamin D may play a role in energy metabolism.

Because researchers noted that low intakes of calcium and Vitamin D frequently coincide with people who are obese, they decided to do a review of randomized controlled trials that have studied how these nutrients affect energy metabolism.

They concluded that there is ample evidence that calcium and vitamin D increase body fat oxidation after eating. And that additionally, calcium promotes a modest energy loss through fecal fat excretion.

According to lead researcher, Mario J. Soares, M.B.B.S., Ph.D, “it is our opinion that calcium with or without vitamin D modulates human energy metabolism. The evidence is convincing that calcium increases fat oxidation after a single meal and over several meals of the day.”

If you’re concerned about maintaining a healthy body weight, you may want to make sure that you’re getting sufficient calcium and vitamin D.
