New Research Confirms Age Fighting Substance

BOSTON – According to researchers, a newly published study conducted by Harvard Medical School has confirmed the anti-aging benefits of resveratrol.

The researchers observed that resveratrol has been the subject of a lot of speculation as to its health benefits. However, there had been some conflicting results from other studies. That’s because in studies with mice that lacked the longevity gene known as SIRT1, there were no apparent benefits from resveratrol.

However, in this study, researchers explained that the results were very compelling: when mice were given low doses of resveratrol after SIRT1 was disabled, the researchers found no noticeable improvement in mitochondrial function. Mitochondrial are the cell’s power supply and important to overall health. In contrast, the mice with normal SIRT1 function given resveratrol showed dramatic increases in energy.

The researchers say that resveratrol may be able to combat many age related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and stroke.

With this new compelling research, you might want to look into if resveratrol is something you could add to your diet.

Avoid a 300% Increased Stroke Risk

Limiting your salt intake may reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke

By Dubravko Sorić SoraZG, via Wikimedia Commons

COVENTRY, UNITED KINGDOM – A new study published in the journal Stroke says that people who eat well over the recommended levels of salt intake are 300% more likely to get a stroke.

Researchers explained that there is considerable research that shows that a higher intake of sodium will increase blood pressure. However, it’s been less clear if that definitely means a higher risk of a stroke or heart attack.

The article goes on to explain that while blood pressure can change quickly, stroke and heart attacks are long term illnesses that aren’t that easy to directly correlate something like diet to.

The World Health Organization recommends a limit of no more than 2000 milligrams a day. However, in this study of nearly 2700 older adults, those that ate the most sodium averaged around 4000 milligrams a day. Over the ten year duration of the study those that ate most sodium had an approximate 300% higher incidence of stroke than those that ate the lowest levels of about 1500 milligrams.

If you’re interested in keeping your risk of stroke as low as possible this study is more corroboration that you might want to keep your salt intake as low as possible.

Dental Cleanings May Protect Your Heart

TAI PEI, TAIWAN – A new study conducted at Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan and published in the American Journal of Medicine indicates that getting regular dental cleanings may decrease the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

In this study of 22,000 subjects that were age 50 and up, they found that the people that had a thorough professional dental cleaning within the past year were less likely to have a heart attack or stroke over the next 7 years.

While researchers say that this doesn’t prove that a good dental cleaning will reduce your risk, it does corroborate other research with similar results.

The researchers believe that because gum disease is caused by bacterial infection it can help cause a chronic state of inflammation in blood vessels which has been clearly linked to heart attack and stroke among other illnesses.

Since getting regular dental cleanings is good for your dental health anyway, you might want to make sure you’re getting regular cleanings.
