Add Years to Your Life

NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY – A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that people who suffer from hypertension but keep their blood pressure under control may add many years to their lives.

It’s estimated that in the United States over 76 million people suffer from hypertension.  According to the National Institute of Health, high blood pressure can put you at greater risk for many serious health conditions such as stroke, heart attacks, kidney failure and dementia.

In the study, subjects that kept their blood pressure under control for more than four years reduced their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease over a 20-year period.

Researchers note that this study corroborates the results of many other studies that indicate that the treatment of adults with elevated blood pressure significantly reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events such as heart and renal failure.

If you’re interested in natural ways to reduce blood pressure below are several that researchers suggest:

* Try CoQ10 supplements.  Multiple studies have shown that it may lower blood pressure.

* Consider folic acid supplementation. Studies have shown that it may help to lower high blood pressure in some people, possibly by reducing elevated homocysteine levels.

* Reduce salt intake and maintain a healthy bodyweight.  Both of these have repeatedly shown to reduce high blood pressure.

* Increase potassium intake through fruits such as bananas.

With the strong evidence that lowering blood pressure can greatly improve your health, you might want to make it one of your highest priorities.

Get Better Sleep With This Juice

NEW CASTLE, ENGLAND – A new study conducted at Northumbria University has confirmed that drinking tart cherry juice helps people sleep better.

This is good news because getting enough sleep is problematic for many people. According to the National Institute of Health over 25% of adults report having occasional trouble sleeping and 10% of adults suffer from chronic sleep problems.

In the study the subjects drank two servings of tart cherry juice.  One was consumed in the morning and the other before bed. On average the group that consumed the cherry juice compared to the control group that drank other kinds of fruit juice, they slept 39 minutes longer, on average, and had up to 6 percent increase in overall sleep efficiency (significantly less non-sleep time in bed).

The researchers believe that the sleep benefits are a result of the melatonin content of cherries.  Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant critical for sleep-wake cycle regulation. Each serving of the tart cherry juice concentrate was estimated to contain the equivalent of 90 – 100 tart cherries, providing a significant level of melatonin in the juice and ultimately in the bodies of the participants.

If you’d like a little natural help sleeping you might consider trying to drink tart cherry juice.

Natural Eye Protection From Glaucoma

London – According to the National Institute of Health, glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the United States.

The good news is that a new study showed that in addition to all of the other health benefits of exercise, that it can also protect your eyes from glaucoma.

In this study, researchers looked at the association between physical activity and eye pressure in 5,650 men and women aged 48 to 90 in Britain. The study found that moderate physical exercise performed about 15 years previously was associated with a 25 percent reduced risk of low ocular perfusion pressure (OPP), an important risk factor for glaucoma.

The study appears in the October issue of the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

“Before now, the only modifiable risk factor for glaucoma was IOP, altered by medication, laser or surgery,” Observed a lead researcher in the study. “We believe our study points toward a new way of reducing glaucoma risk, through maintaining an active lifestyle. This is a way that people can participate in altering their risk of glaucoma and many other serious health problems.”

The significant protection to your eyes that this study has uncovered is one more reason you might want to consider making regular exercise part of your lifestyle.
