Licorice Root May Protect Against Diabetes

BERLIN, GERMANY – A study conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics suggests that licorice root may protect against diabetes.

Licorice root provides the raw material for licorice candy. Licorice root has been used for centuries to treat a variety of symptoms such as calming the stomach and relieving diseases of the airways.

However, researchers have discovered that a substance in it called amorfrutins that in addition to reducing blood sugar, are also anti-inflammatory and are very well tolerated.

The researchers explained that the binding of the amorfrutin molecules activates various genes that reduce the plasma concentration of certain fatty acids and glucose. The reduced glucose level prevents the development of insulin resistance which is the main cause of adult diabetes.

While the researchers say that eating licorice or drinking a licorice tea (a common way the supplement is ingested) is not concentrated enough to be a full treatment of diabetes.

However, consumed in modest quantities it may offer a variety of health benefits including some protection against diabetes as a result of it’s blood sugar reducing qualities.

If you’re interested in the prevention of the development of insulin resistance and the other anti-inflammatory benefits of licorice root you might want to look into if it’s something you could add to your diet.

What You Eat For Breakfast May Affect Your Blood Sugar

Nuts, grains, oats, flax seeds, and almonds for breakfast may regulate blood sugar

WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA – Researchers at Purdue University say a new study shows that what you eat at breakfast may help control your blood sugar levels throughout the day.

According to researchers the rise of diabetes and pre-diabetes is happening so fast that it’s estimated that by 2030, more than 16 percent of the global population will have a blood sugar problem.

In this study the researchers examined what happened when people ate foods that are low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index ranks foods on the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating.

Foods with a high index are quickly digested and cause large changes in blood sugar levels. Foods with a low glycemic index cause gradual slower rises in blood sugar and insulin levels. Low glycemic foods are considered healthier for everyone, but in particular for people with diabetes.

Specifically, the researchers focused on people who ate whole almonds at breakfast. Participants who ate a breakfast containing whole almonds felt fuller for a longer period and they had lower blood glucose concentrations after breakfast and lunch than the subjects that did not have a low glycemic breakfast.

Below is a list of foods that are low on the glycemic list:

  • Oats
  • Whole grains
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Sweet potato
  • Flax seed

If you’d like to help control your blood sugar naturally you may want to try eating foods that are low on the glycemic index for breakfast.

Less Sleep May Increase Risk of Diabetes

BOSTON – A study conducted by Harvard Medical School and Brigham Women’s Hospital suggests that people who do not sleep enough or have irregular sleep patterns have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

The researchers found that shift-like sleep patterns led to poorer glucose regulation and metabolism.

For this study the researchers decided to conduct the study in the laboratory contrary to the majority of studies which have been epidemiological (a collection and study of data).

The subjects were allowed 10 hours of bed time each day so they could get a normal amount of sleep for a ten day period prior to the disruption experimentation.

Then, for the next 39 days, the participants sleep was disrupted in a variety of different manners. At the end of each stage, they had their vital statistics measured.

The researchers determined that when the subjects had their sleep interfered with and diminished there was a considerable drop in insulin production after meals.

Insulin concentrations, during fasting periods, after meals, as well as integrated plasma insulin concentration dropped considerably, by an average of 12%, 27% and 27%, the researchers explained.

This resulted in considerable rises in fasting as well and after meal peak plasma glucose concentrations, versus responses to the same meal at the start of the study. Fasting concentrations increased, overall, by an average 8%, after-meal concentrations by 14%, and the integrated postprandial response over 1.5 hours rose by 15%.

After the sleep deprivation segment of the experiment, subjects were allowed to return to a normal sleep ritual. The result was that all the subjects returned to their pre-testing levels of insulin and glucose.

If you are looking to reduce your risk of developing diabetes, you might want to make sure that you get enough regular sleep.
