Fat Location May Be More Important Than BMI

MINNEAPOLIS – A new study conducted by the University of Minnesota indicates that where your fat is located may be more important than your BMI (body mass index).

The Center for Disease Control states that approximately 250,000 deaths a year in the United States are the result of sudden cardiac death. They define sudden cardiac death as a death that results within one hour of initial heart attack symptoms.

This study had over 15,000 subjects with an average age of 54 years old. During the 13 year period that the subjects were followed more than 300 of them died of sudden cardiac death.

After the researchers accounted for other factors such as age, sex, race, education, smoking status and family history of heart disease, they found that only the elevated waist-to-hip ratio was still linked with sudden cardiac death.

According to study researcher Dr. Selcuk Adabag:

“The significance of this study is that it shows that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death, even after accounting for factors such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease.”

While the reason that an elevated waist-to-hip ratio has such a strong link hasn’t been conclusively proven, Dr. Adabag believes that where fat is stored is important for heart risks.

“Fat in the abdomen spews inflammatory substances,” he said.” Inflammation is linked with heart problems.”

With this new research showing how critical abdominal obesity is, you might want to make it a priority to use exercise and diet to control the size of your stomach.

Fight Muscle Loss and Inflammation

Including exercise, such as jogging, may help you build muscle and reduce inflammation as you age

By Gruban / Patrick Gruban, via Wikimedia Commons

DALLAS – According to a new study published in Circulation, exercise has been proven to not only counter age related muscle breakdown, but also reduce inflammation caused by aging.

The researchers conducted a study with two groups. One half of the participants were healthy volunteers and the other half had previous heart failure. Additionally, half of the participants were under 55 years of age and the others were 65 years and older.

For four weeks, half of the participants in each age group were given exercise regimes that included both cardiovascular and muscle building exercise while the other half did no exercise. Researchers took muscle biopsies of all participants before and after the exercise period.

The results where that heart failure patients 55 and under increased their peak oxygen uptake by 25 percent, while those 65 and over increased it by 27 percent.

Furthermore, according to the biopsy results, researchers found that levels of a muscle protein indicating muscle breakdown, known as MuRF1, were higher in participants with heart failure than in their healthier counterparts. However, exercise reduced MuRF1 and reduced muscle inflammation, measured by levels of a protein called TNF-alpha.

According to Stephan Gielen, M.D., lead co-author and Deputy Director of Cardiology at the University Hospital, Martin-Luther-University of Halle, Germany:

“Exercise switches off the muscle-wasting pathways and switches on pathways involved in muscle growth, counteracting muscle loss and exercise intolerance in heart failure patients.”

With all of the well established benefits of exercise and this new information that it can actually reduce inflammation, you might want to make sure that you are on a regular exercise program.

Study Shows How Dark Chocolate Protects Heart

Eating small amounts of dark chocolate may improve your heart health

SAN DIEGO – A new study to be presented at the Experimental Biology 2012 meeting in San Diego indicates how dark chocolate might help heart health.

Over the last several years there have been a number of studies that have reported that modest dark chocolate consumption may benefit heart health. However, there hasn’t been much research in identifying precisely what causes the health benefit.

So the researchers at San Diego State University conducted a study on participants who ate either 50 grams of dark chocolate or white chocolate.

The participants’ blood pressure, forearm skin blood flow, circulating lipid (fat) profiles and blood glucose levels were recorded before and after they consumed the chocolate for 15 days.

The tests revealed that those who ate dark chocolate had lower levels of blood glucose and “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and higher levels of “good” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol than those who ate white chocolate.

Researchers believe the cause of these health benefits is that dark chocolate contains flavanols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The researchers again caution that dark chocolate should be eaten in moderation so as not to offset any health benefits with excessive calorie intake and resulting increases in weight.

If you’re interested in protecting your heart through diet, you might want to consider including modest portions of dark chocolate in your diet.
