Study Says Eating Fish Lowers Risk of Colon Cancer

XI’AN, CHINA – A new study published in the American Journal of Medicine reports that people who eat plenty of fish may have a lower risk of colon and rectal cancers.

With colon cancer being the third most common cancer diagnosed for both men and women in the United States according to cancer.org, researchers found this new study to be of great importance.

In this study, the researchers combined the results from 41 previously published studies that measured fish consumption and cases of cancer. That included research from the U.S., Norway, Japan, Finland and elsewhere.

The results were that regularly eating fish was tied to a significant 12 percent lower risk of developing or dying of colon or rectal cancer. And, this was after taking into account study participants’ age, alcohol and red meat intake, family history of cancer and other risk factors.

While the researchers can’t say for sure what is causing the risk reduction they hypothesize that the added benefit could be coming from the omega-3 essential fatty acids found in a variety of fish such as herring, sardines, spanish mackerel and salmon.

With other research showing many health benefits from eating fish, this research gives you a good reason to consider making fish a regular part of your diet.

Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk Through Your Diet

Adding Omega-3 fatty acids through fish, like salmon, to your diet may reduce your risk of getting Alzheimer's disease

NEW YORK CITY – A new study published in the journal Neurology suggests that eating foods with an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids may protect you against Alzheimer’s disease.

The study had approximately 1200 subjects who had no signs of dementia and were over the age of 65. All the participants were given blood tests for an Alzheimer’s-associated protein called beta amyloid protein.

According to study author Yian Gu, a researcher at Columbia University:

“Past research has shown that, in this population, higher levels of the beta amyloid protein appear related to a higher risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease. So, we wanted to try and figure out if what we eat can affect these levels.”

The researchers decided to focus on omega-3 diets because previous studies that focused on subjects who ate Mediterranean diets that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids have been associated with a lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers concluded that blood testing showed that, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity and educational background, the more omega-3 fatty acids consumed, the lower the beta amyloid levels found in the blood.

The team also noted that omega-3 fatty acids were consumed primarily in the form of fish, poultry, margarine, nuts and salad dressing.

While the researchers emphasize that more research is needed, this study offers hope that the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease may be able to lowered through diet.

Along with the other well established health benefits of consuming omega-3 fatty acids, this study gives you another reason to consider making them a regular part of your diet.

Red Meat Can Increase Risk of Death by 12%

Having just one serving of red meat a day may increase your risk of mortality

BOSTON – A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine says that people who substitute red meat with other protein sources such as fish and poultry have a lower risk of death.

The study was conducted by the the Harvard School of Public Health. In total there were approximately 121,000 subjects that were followed up to 28 years.

The researchers reported:

We found that a higher intake of red meat was associated with a significantly elevated risk of total, CVD and cancer mortality, and this association was observed for unprocessed and processed red meat, with a relatively greater risk for processed red meat. Substitution of fish, poultry, nuts, legumes, low-fat dairy products and whole grains for red meat was associated with a significantly lower risk of mortality.”

The study’s statistics indicated that having one serving of red meat per day increased your risk of mortality by 12%.

After analyzing meat substitutes, they estimated that replacing one daily serving of total red meat with one serving of either fish, poultry, vegetables, nuts, low-fat dairy products or whole grains lowered the mortality risk by 7%, 14%, 10%, 19%, 10% and 14% respectively.

With this new study adding to existing research on the risk of heavy red meat consumption, you might want to seriously consider minimizing your red meat consumption.
