Waist to Height Ratio Can Prolong Your Life

LYON, FRANCE – A study presented at that the 19th Congress on Obesity suggests that you can increase the likelihood of living longer by paying attention to your waist to height ratio.

While the notion of using the waist to height ratio isn’t new, lead researcher, Dr Margaret Ashwell, who was the former science director of the British Nutrition Foundation says it is coming into prominence in the scientific community.

She says that another measure of obesity called the BMI, (Body Mass Index) is not as effective. That is because although it is a ratio of a person’s weight in kilos to the square of their height in meters, it doesn’t take note of where fat is located.

Fat located around the stomach affects organs like the heart, liver and kidneys more adversely than fat around the hips and bottom, in terms of cardiometabolic risk.
Dr. Ashwell says that a man who is 6ft or 72 inches tall (183 cm), should keep his waist under 36 inches (91 cm), and a woman who is 5ft 4 in or 64 inches tall (163 cm), should keep her waist measurement under 32 inches (81 cm).
In the study that had about 300,000 subjects the researchers found that the waist to height ratio was better able to predict high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks and strokes than BMI.

The method recommended by the World Health Organization to measure the waist circumference is to measure mid-way between the lower rib and the top of the pelvic bone at the hip.

With this new study confirming that excess abdominal fat is very bad for your health, you might want to commit to making sure that your waist is no more than half of your height.

Fat Location May Be More Important Than BMI

MINNEAPOLIS – A new study conducted by the University of Minnesota indicates that where your fat is located may be more important than your BMI (body mass index).

The Center for Disease Control states that approximately 250,000 deaths a year in the United States are the result of sudden cardiac death. They define sudden cardiac death as a death that results within one hour of initial heart attack symptoms.

This study had over 15,000 subjects with an average age of 54 years old. During the 13 year period that the subjects were followed more than 300 of them died of sudden cardiac death.

After the researchers accounted for other factors such as age, sex, race, education, smoking status and family history of heart disease, they found that only the elevated waist-to-hip ratio was still linked with sudden cardiac death.

According to study researcher Dr. Selcuk Adabag:

“The significance of this study is that it shows that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death, even after accounting for factors such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease.”

While the reason that an elevated waist-to-hip ratio has such a strong link hasn’t been conclusively proven, Dr. Adabag believes that where fat is stored is important for heart risks.

“Fat in the abdomen spews inflammatory substances,” he said.” Inflammation is linked with heart problems.”

With this new research showing how critical abdominal obesity is, you might want to make it a priority to use exercise and diet to control the size of your stomach.

Spice May Fight Fat

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – A new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry suggests that black pepper may be able to fight fat.

Piperine is a pungent tasting substance that gives black pepper its taste. The researchers explained that previous studies have shown that piperine can reduce fat in the bloodstream and that it had other health benefits, however no one really knew how piperine works.

In this study the researchers sought to determine how piperine works on a molecular level. The researchers used laboratory studies and computer models to discover that piperine interferes with the activities of genes that control the formation of new fat cells. They also believe that additionally, this activity sets off a metabolic chain reaction that also helps prevent fat formation.

The researchers emphasize more studies are needed to determine if piperine or black pepper extracts can be used in fighting obesity and related diseases. However, they say that with other possible health benefits and this potential to fight fat you might want to consider including black pepper in your diet.
