Strength Training May Protect Your Brain

VANCOUVER – A new study published in Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that strength training may ward off dementia.

The researchers explained in their report that much of the research previously conducted in regards to exercise and dementia prevention was focused on aerobic activity (cardiovascular exercise).

But, the researchers found in their study that while aerobic activity delivered physical health benefits, it was only the strength training that helped improve cognitive function.

The subjects in this study were women between the ages of 70-80 years old who were experiencing mild cognitive symptoms. For a period of six months the subjects were divided into different groups. One group did aerobics, one did a balance and fitness class and one did strength training.

In comparison to the other two groups, the participants in the strength training group showed much more significant improvements in brain function. The participants were measured with both cognitive tests and MRI tests to examine for actual changes in brain function.

The strength training group experienced activity changes in three specific parts of the brain’s cortex associated with cognitive behavior, the researchers found. However, these changes were not seen among the other two groups.

With all of the other well established health benefits of strength training and based on this study, you might want to make sure you’re doing regular strength training to help protect against dementia.

More Proof That Fatty Acids Can Protect Your Brain

Tuna fish contains healthy Omega 3 which may protect your brain

LOS ANGELES – A new study published in the journal Neurology adds more proof that eating fish may protect your brain.

In this study the researchers added a new dimension to previous research by being able to evaluate how much omega-3 fatty acids subjects had consumed over the last several months. Previous research only was able to measure just several days of eating before being tested.

For the study, researchers measured the red blood cell level of fatty acids in 1,575 subjects who did not have dementia and had an average age of 67. About three months later, participants underwent were tested with mental diagnostic tests and MRI scans that examined brain size and blood supply in the brain.

The researchers found that those with the lowest levels of omega-3s had worse scores on the diagnostic tests than people who ranked in the top 75 percent for fatty-acid levels.

Additionally those in the bottom 25 percent also had a smaller brain volume overall. This decrease in brain volume  made their brains appear two years older than those of people in the top three-quarters for fatty-acid levels.

Finally, the brain scans also showed signs of less blood supply in the brains of people with the lowest omega-3 levels. The low blood supply levels helped to corroborate a better brain health for those with higher omega-3 levels.

Even after the researchers calculated for other factors, the omega-3 levels had a clear relationship to the better brain health.

With the other health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids you can get from your diet by eating fish like salmon or tuna and this new study, you might want to make eating these foods regularly a priority.

Mineral Offers Health Benefits and Risks

Brazil nuts, fish and poultry are good sources of selenium

SURREY, ENGLAND – New research published in the Lancet regarding taking selenium supplements indicate that there are both health benefits and risks if too much is taken.

Researchers found that the daily intake of selenium ranged from as little as 7 micrograms per day to as much as 4,990 micrograms per day. In Europe, the average intake was 40 micrograms per day, and in the United States, the average daily intake was 93 micrograms for women and 134 micrograms for men.

The average daily intake recommendations for selenium are 60 micrograms per day for men and 53 micrograms per day for women

The researchers found that people who were not deficient in selenium had lower chances of developing all forms of cancer and that their immune systems functioned better.

Additionally, people with low levels of selenium were found to be more prone to dementia and scored worse on cognitive brain function tests.

However, people with very high selenium levels may have a greater risk of type 2 diabetes, non-melanoma skin cancers, hair loss and skin rashes.

Researchers say the only way to know if your selenium levels are adequate is with a blood test. However, in general they say that a deficiency in the United States is rare.

They also say that outside of excessive consumption of Brazil nuts there is little risk from getting too much from food. So, if you want to be sure to get enough selenium you can eat foods known to be rich in selenium.

Some foods with selenium are Brazil nuts, fish, poultry and wheat.

With the significant health benefits from selenium you may want to make sure you’re getting enough in your diet without overdoing it.
