Purpose Protects Your Mental Function

Feeling like you have a purpose in life and staying active may protect you against Alzheimer's disease

CHICAGO – A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry indicates that having a purpose in life may help protect against Alzheimer’s Disease.

The researchers from the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied 246 participants who did not have Alzheimer’s disease. They were clinically evaluated for approximately ten years preceding their deaths. Particular attention was paid to how they answered questions regarding their purpose in life.

Upon their deaths, autopsies were conducted that quantified their levels of plaques and tangles that have been associated with dementia. Plaques and tangles disrupt memory and other cognitive functions.

The researchers examined whether purpose in life slowed the rate of cognitive decline even though all of those who aged accumulated plaques and tangles.

According to lead researcher, Patricia A. Boyle, PhD:

“Our study showed that people who reported greater purpose in life exhibited better cognition than those with less purpose in life even as plaques and tangles accumulated in their brains. These findings suggest that purpose in life protects against the harmful effects of plaques and tangles on memory and other thinking abilities. This is encouraging and suggests that engaging in meaningful and purposeful activities promotes cognitive health in old age.”

Besides potentially making your life more emotionally fulfilling, this study suggests maintaining an active life can potentially protect you against dementia.

Strength Training May Protect Your Brain

VANCOUVER – A new study published in Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that strength training may ward off dementia.

The researchers explained in their report that much of the research previously conducted in regards to exercise and dementia prevention was focused on aerobic activity (cardiovascular exercise).

But, the researchers found in their study that while aerobic activity delivered physical health benefits, it was only the strength training that helped improve cognitive function.

The subjects in this study were women between the ages of 70-80 years old who were experiencing mild cognitive symptoms. For a period of six months the subjects were divided into different groups. One group did aerobics, one did a balance and fitness class and one did strength training.

In comparison to the other two groups, the participants in the strength training group showed much more significant improvements in brain function. The participants were measured with both cognitive tests and MRI tests to examine for actual changes in brain function.

The strength training group experienced activity changes in three specific parts of the brain’s cortex associated with cognitive behavior, the researchers found. However, these changes were not seen among the other two groups.

With all of the other well established health benefits of strength training and based on this study, you might want to make sure you’re doing regular strength training to help protect against dementia.

Your Weight May Affect How Your Mind Works

Being over weight may cause a decline in mental ability

By Aspen04, via Wikimedia Commons

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – A study published in the journal Age and Ageing indicates that being overweight may affect your mind’s ability to function.

In this study which used subjects between 60-70 years in age, the researchers sought to investigate if there was a correlation between excessive body fat and mental decline.

The participants in the study were measured for their BMI and then given a battery of mental functioning tests.

The researchers found that a high body mass index (BMI) was associated with poorer mental performance.

Additionally, the study found that subjects with the highest level of abdominal fat had worse thinking skills than those with the least amount of abdominal fat.

“Our findings have important public health implications. The prevention of obesity, particularly central obesity, might be important for the prevention of cognitive decline or dementia,” reported lead author Dae Hyun Yoon, of the Seoul National University Hospital Healthcare System in South Korea.

With this study adding to the evidence of health risks associated with being overweight, you might want to make sure that your BMI is within what is considered normal limits.
