Study Shows How Dark Chocolate Protects Heart

Eating small amounts of dark chocolate may improve your heart health

SAN DIEGO – A new study to be presented at the Experimental Biology 2012 meeting in San Diego indicates how dark chocolate might help heart health.

Over the last several years there have been a number of studies that have reported that modest dark chocolate consumption may benefit heart health. However, there hasn’t been much research in identifying precisely what causes the health benefit.

So the researchers at San Diego State University conducted a study on participants who ate either 50 grams of dark chocolate or white chocolate.

The participants’ blood pressure, forearm skin blood flow, circulating lipid (fat) profiles and blood glucose levels were recorded before and after they consumed the chocolate for 15 days.

The tests revealed that those who ate dark chocolate had lower levels of blood glucose and “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and higher levels of “good” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol than those who ate white chocolate.

Researchers believe the cause of these health benefits is that dark chocolate contains flavanols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The researchers again caution that dark chocolate should be eaten in moderation so as not to offset any health benefits with excessive calorie intake and resulting increases in weight.

If you’re interested in protecting your heart through diet, you might want to consider including modest portions of dark chocolate in your diet.

BATON ROUGE – A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition indicates that eating tree nuts and peanuts can protect against metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular illness.

This study has just under 14,000 subjects and sought to determine how eating tree nuts affect consumers compared with those that ate no nuts.

The study had some very clear results. Those that ate the nuts had lower blood pressure, blood sugar, bad cholesterol and Body Mass Index (BMI).

Additionally, the subjects that are the nuts had lower levels of C-reactive protein which is a marker for inflammation that is considered a risk factor for many chronic diseases including heart attacks, strokes and cancer.

Some of the different tree nuts are almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts.

The lead researcher of the study, Dr. O’Neil stated, “tree nuts should be an integral part of a healthy diet and encouraged by health professionals.”

Researchers recommend a portion of about 1 one ounce each day of uncooked, unsalted nuts to help reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome and other chronic diseases.

If you’re interested in protecting your health through your diet, you might want to consider eating a portion of nuts on a daily basis.

Chocolate May Make You Weigh Less

Antioxidants in chocolate may help reduce your BMI

By jules, via Wikimedia Commons

SAN DIEGO – A new study conducted by the University of California, San Diego suggests that people who eat chocolate regularly have a lower body mass than those that rarely eat it.

While researchers aren’t suggesting that eating chocolate will make you lose weight, they say that antioxidants in chocolate could be behind health benefits including lower blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as decreased body weight.

This study had 1000 subjects of adults up to 85 years old. Interestingly, even though they found that the participants that ate chocolate regularly also ate larger amounts of overall calories, they still had a lower body mass index (BMI).

And, it was still the case after researchers accounted for participants’ age and gender, as well as how much they exercised.

The chocolate eaters had a five- to seven-pound difference between from those that didn’t eat any.

Researchers observed that past studies have tied chocolate to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and better insulin sensitivity, possibly because of antioxidants or other chemicals in cocoa.

With the previous research and this new study indicating a health benefit from eating chocolate, you may want to consider adding a modest amount of chocolate to your diet.
