Four Steps to a Faster Metabolism

Aerobic exercise is one way to speed up your metabolism which will aid in weight loss

CHICAGO - In a published report cited by Natural Health Science News, it suggests that there are concrete steps you can take to naturally increase your metabolism.

Your metabolism is the process by which your body converts food into energy and it results in the burning calories.

Researchers observe that the metabolic process of every person varies.  Those that have a high metabolism are able to consume more food without gaining weight than those with slower metabolisms.

It’s reported that the two primary causes of a slow metabolism are genetics and lifestyle.  While you can’t change your genetics, you can adjust your lifestyle.

Below are some tips researchers give to increase your metabolism:

  • Do aerobic exercise which burns calories while you’re moving and also causes your metabolism to remain elevated for up to two hours after you stop.
  • Do resistance training which builds muscles that not only burn calories while doing the exercises, but the resulting muscles will continue to burn more calories than fat, even while you’re at rest.
  • Avoid starvation diets which can lower your metabolism.
  • Break up larger meals into four or five mini-meals per day which may aid in increasing metabolism.

If you’re interested in losing body fat or even just maintaining a healthy bodyweight, you might want to follow the above steps which can help keep up a more robust metabolism.

Double Your Chances of Losing 5% of Your Body Weight

Replacing sugary drinks with water has been shown to aid in weight loss

CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA – A new study published by the Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that by simply replacing sugary drinks with water your chances of losing a lot more weight are almost doubled.

The researchers note that basic common sense tells you that if you replace sugary drinks with water, you’ll lose weight.  However, there hadn’t been any studies done to see if just doing this swap alone will result in weight loss.

So for the new study, researchers randomly assigned 318 overweight adults to one of three groups: one that replaced sugary drinks with water; one that substituted with diet beverages; and one that was given weight-loss advice and could make diet changes of their choice.

After six months, all three groups averaged a loss of four to five pounds. But the two groups that cut sugary drinks were more likely to shed at least five percent of their starting weight: 20 percent did, versus 11 percent of the comparison group.

According to the lead researcher, Deborah F. Tate, from the University of North Carolina, a five percent weight loss is considered clinically meaningful.  This is especially of note when you consider that the overall average loss of body weight from all subjects in the study was only 2%.

So, the numbers indicate that replacing sugary drinks can potentially make a very big difference in your weight loss effort results.

Additionally, the groups that replaced their sugar drinks with water also enjoyed an average blood pressure and blood sugar level reduction of several points.

Because of these added health benefits the water drinkers enjoyed, the researchers suggest that water may be a healthier option than artificially sweetened drinks which have also been shown in other studies to increase the risk of diabetes when consumed regularly.

If you’re interested in losing weight you might want to increase your odds by replacing all of your sugary drinks with water.

CINCINNATI – A recent article published in an issue of Cell Metabolism says that the type of food you eat can affect whether it turns off your appetite.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, about one-third of U.S. adults are obese, a number that continues to climb.  There are considerable studies that show that being overweight increases the risk of many health problems including heart illness, cancer and diabetes.

That is why researchers are emphasizing the importance of understanding the biology of how what you eat affects your hunger.

The article goes on to explain that early man had a biological need to consume as much high fat food as possible.  This way, if food became scarce the body had fat stored to allow survival.

According to lead author Randy Seeley, PhD, “leptin is a key hormone that is secreted from fat tissue, or adipose tissue, and its main function is to inhibit appetite. Via a number of molecular mechanisms, eating a high-fat diet reduces the actions of leptin in the brain. This miscommunication can lead to increased food intake and weight gain.”

In other words for ancient man to survive he needed to continue to want to eat as much high fat food was available, so his brain was programmed not to recognize he was full after eating high fat food.

The problem is that today, food is readily available for virtually everyone in the more affluent nations.  But, our brains are still not getting the signal to stop eating after consuming high fat foods.

The researchers suggest that by understanding the biology of it, you can more easily control your caloric and fat intake which will allow you to have more control of your weight.

With the stakes being so high when it comes to avoiding being overweight, you may want to consider how much high fat food you’re eating when planning your diet.
