Purpose Protects Your Mental Function

Feeling like you have a purpose in life and staying active may protect you against Alzheimer's disease

By Catherine Scott, via Wikimedia Commons

CHICAGO – A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry indicates that having a purpose in life may help protect against Alzheimer’s Disease.

The researchers from the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied 246 participants who did not have Alzheimer’s disease. They were clinically evaluated for approximately ten years preceding their deaths. Particular attention was paid to how they answered questions regarding their purpose in life.

Upon their deaths, autopsies were conducted that quantified their levels of plaques and tangles that have been associated with dementia. Plaques and tangles disrupt memory and other cognitive functions.

The researchers examined whether purpose in life slowed the rate of cognitive decline even though all of those who aged accumulated plaques and tangles.

According to lead researcher, Patricia A. Boyle, PhD:

“Our study showed that people who reported greater purpose in life exhibited better cognition than those with less purpose in life even as plaques and tangles accumulated in their brains. These findings suggest that purpose in life protects against the harmful effects of plaques and tangles on memory and other thinking abilities. This is encouraging and suggests that engaging in meaningful and purposeful activities promotes cognitive health in old age.”

Besides potentially making your life more emotionally fulfilling, this study suggests maintaining an active life can potentially protect you against dementia.

Fight Muscle Loss and Inflammation

Including exercise, such as jogging, may help you build muscle and reduce inflammation as you age

DALLAS – According to a new study published in Circulation, exercise has been proven to not only counter age related muscle breakdown, but also reduce inflammation caused by aging.

The researchers conducted a study with two groups. One half of the participants were healthy volunteers and the other half had previous heart failure. Additionally, half of the participants were under 55 years of age and the others were 65 years and older.

For four weeks, half of the participants in each age group were given exercise regimes that included both cardiovascular and muscle building exercise while the other half did no exercise. Researchers took muscle biopsies of all participants before and after the exercise period.

The results where that heart failure patients 55 and under increased their peak oxygen uptake by 25 percent, while those 65 and over increased it by 27 percent.

Furthermore, according to the biopsy results, researchers found that levels of a muscle protein indicating muscle breakdown, known as MuRF1, were higher in participants with heart failure than in their healthier counterparts. However, exercise reduced MuRF1 and reduced muscle inflammation, measured by levels of a protein called TNF-alpha.

According to Stephan Gielen, M.D., lead co-author and Deputy Director of Cardiology at the University Hospital, Martin-Luther-University of Halle, Germany:

“Exercise switches off the muscle-wasting pathways and switches on pathways involved in muscle growth, counteracting muscle loss and exercise intolerance in heart failure patients.”

With all of the well established benefits of exercise and this new information that it can actually reduce inflammation, you might want to make sure that you are on a regular exercise program.

Exercise and Computer Use Can Protect Your Brain

Computer use, along with exercise, may help prevent against memory loss

By User Gflores, via Wikimedia Commons

PHOENIX – A study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings indicates that seniors who do moderate exercise and get mental stimulation from computer use may reduce the risk of memory loss more than computer use or exercise by themselves.

This study had 920 subjects between the ages of 70-93 years old. The researchers discovered that 38 percent of participants who did not exercise and did not use a computer had mild cognitive impairment.

But, in stark contrast only 18 percent of those that did both mild exercise and also used a computer regularly had mild cognitive impairment. Mild cognitive impairment is defined as between normal age related memory loss and early Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers also defined moderate exercise as including brisk walking, hiking, aerobics, strength training, golfing without a golf cart, swimming, doubles tennis, yoga, and martial arts such as Tai Chi.

While the researchers were quick to point out that although they were able to establish a correlation between exercise, computer use and cognitive impairment, they haven’t established a cause and effect relationship yet.

Nevertheless, this study gives you a good reason to consider making sure that you are doing moderate exercise and getting brain stimulation regularly through activities such as using a computer.

Have a healthy day,
