CHICAGO—A recent study conducted at Rush University Medical Center and published in the journal Neurology found that consuming the proper amount of vitamin B12 is healthy for your brain.

The study involved 121 people over the age of 65. The researchers measured 5-biochemical markers of B12 levels (one was a blood test), they also tested memory and other cognitive skills.

After 4 years, the team found that the participants with the highest levels of B12 in their blood had the best scores on the memory and cognitive tests. They also found that the MRI brain scans showed the brains of those with high levels of B12 were bigger compared to those with low levels of B12. They noted that brain shrinkage is linked to cognitive decline.

According to Mayoclinic.com the recommended amount of vitamin B12 is 2.4 micrograms daily for adults; the following foods are high in vitamin B12:

  • Shellfish
  • Liver
  • Fish and crab
  • Red meat
  • Swiss cheese
  • Eggs
