Health Benefits Associated With Hugging

NORTH CAROLINA—A recent study conducted at the University of North Carolina found that hugging and touching are not only beneficial for emotional well-being, but has also shown to help alleviate stress, depression, fatigue, and lowers the risk of heart disease.

The study included 16 married couples, and a group of participants who gave a presentation. The researchers measured blood pressure, and stress levels.

The team found that a short 10-second hug per day helps reduce blood pressure, and increases levels of feel-good chemicals called oxytocin. They also found that those who received more hugs from their partners have lower blood pressure and heart rates compared to those who did not receive as many hugs. In addition, they tested stress levels and found that those who did a presentation and then received a hug following it had significantly lower stress levels compared to those who did not receive a hug.

Past studies have shown health benefits that are also associated with the chemical “oxytocin”. They have found that it can improve social skills, fight stress, and promote heart health. This nerve is connected to a number of your body’s organs, including the heart.

The researchers noted that these benefits could come from any form of touch, including: hugs, massages, handholding, and even petting a dog.
