Dancing Can Help Prevent Dementia
NEW YORK—A recent study conducted at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that dancing could help prevent or slow the onset of dementia.
The study was ongoing for 21 years; the participants were 75 and older. All of the participants completed different cognitive activities, which included reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and playing musical instruments. The subjects also completed different physical activities, which included dancing, golf, bicycling, and walking for exercise.
The team found that only one physical activity helped fight off dementia, which was dancing. In addition, they found that dancing had a much greater effect in preventing dementia than any other cognitive activity. They found that reading reduced the risk of dementia by 35 percent, and crossword puzzles by 47 percent. However, frequent dancing reduced the risk for dementia by 76 percent.
It is also noted that not only was dancing found to significantly reduce your risk for dementia but it also increased serotonin levels in the brain, which helps reduce stress and depression. In addition, they found that elderly people who dance fall less frequently, and have reduced risk of bone fractures.
According to the researchers:
“Dance is a unique form of exercise that involves music and rhythm. Multifaceted, it has emotional, mental and social aspects in addition to the physical. Whatever the scientific principles are that produce its advantages, it is clearly beneficial for health.”
If you are interested in reducing your risk for dementia and receiving other positive benefits, you should consider dancing as often as possible.
