Volunteering Can Help Prevent High Blood Pressure
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA—A recent study conducted at Carnegie Mellon University and published in the journal Psychology and Aging found that people who volunteer are significantly less likely to have high blood pressure.
This finding may be an effective medicine free way to fight off high blood pressure. High blood pressure is also known as hypertension and it affects 65 million Americans. It is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States.
The study included 1100 participants between the ages of 51-91. They were interviewed about their volunteering and had their blood pressure checked in 2006 and 2010. All of the volunteers had normal blood pressure at the time of the first interview.
The researchers found that the subjects who said in the first interview that they volunteered for at least 200 hours per year were 40 percent less likely to have high blood pressure four years later compared to those who did not volunteer. It is noted that the type of volunteered activity does not matter; the amount of time spent helping others is what is associated with lowering blood pressure.
According to lead author Rodlescia Sneed, Ph.D.:
“Here, we wanted to determine if a positive lifestyle factor like volunteer work could actually reduce disease risk. And, the results give older adults an example of something that they can actively do to remain healthy and age successfully.”
