Cinnamon Can Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA—A recent study conducted at the University of California found that compounds in cinnamon could delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that is known to gradually get worse over time. The cause of this disease is still unknown. However, researchers believe certain changes in the tau proteins in the brain tissue are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. When tau proteins go through abnormal modifications, they form “tangles” and can no longer stay stabilized leading to dementias like Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers found that compounds found in cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde and epicathechin could help stop these “tangles” from forming in the brain. Cinnamaldehyde mixes together two residues of an amino acid called cysteine on the tau protein. This protects the protein from stress that could lead to abnormal changes.

According to one of the authors and graduate student researcher at University of California, Roshini George:

“The problem with tau in Alzheimer’s is that it starts aggregating, when the protein does not bind properly to the microtubules that form the cell’s structure, it has a tendency to clump together forming insoluble fibers in the neuron”
