Magnesium Helps Prevent Heart Disease
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTES—A recent study conducted at Harvard University and published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that increasing your consumption of Magnesium could significantly reduce the risk for heart disease.
The National Institutes of Health lists magnesium as an important substance that helps hundreds of your bodily functions. Some include, maintaining normal muscle and nerve function, keeping your heart rhythm steady, keeping a healthy immune system, keeps your bones strong, and helps with blood sugar management and healthy blood pressure.
It is noted that between 70 and 80% of the US population does not meet their recommended dosage of magnesium.
The study combined data from 313,041 people in 16 different studies. After analyzing the data the researchers found that for every .2 increment increase in consumption of magnesium led to a 30% lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
There are many foods that contain magnesium. Some include, rice, oat, squash, dark chocolate, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, edamame, and mixed nuts. The recommended dosage is about 400 mg of magnesium per day.
