A Healthy Heart Can Also Prevent Kidney Disease
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA—A recent study conducted at the University of Alabama and is being published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN) found that improving your heart health can also reduce the risk for Kidney Disease.
The researchers used the American Heart Association’s recently published tool “Life’s Simple 7” that assesses individuals’ heart health. Life’s Simple 7 includes not smoking, being physically active, heart healthy diet, normal weight, maintaining low blood sugar, low blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. If a person has all 7 of these components then their score is a “7”.
The study looked for a link between Life’s Simple 7 components with kidney failure with 3,093 participants with stage 3 or 4 chronic kidney disease. The researchers followed up with these individuals every 4 years.
The study found that the individuals with 2-3 ideal factors had significantly lower risks for kidney failure, those who had 4 ideal factors cut their risk of kidney disease by 50%, and none of the participants with 5-7 ideal factors developed kidney disease.
According the study’s lead researcher, Paul Muntner, PhD:
“This study highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, not just on patients’ risk for developing heart disease but also for the prevention of kidney failure,”
