Fish Oil Can Prevent Diabetes

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS— A recent study conducted at Harvard University and is being published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) could help reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes.

Omega-3 fatty acids increase a hormone called adiponectin, which is linked with insulin regulation and to a lower risk for heart disease.

The researchers analyzed 682 participants who consumed fish oil and 641 participants who consumed placebos (olive oil).

The team found that the subjects who consumed fish oil had a significant increase in the levels of adiponectin in their blood.

According to the study’s lead author, Jason Wu:

“Results from our study suggest that higher intake of fish oil may moderately increase blood level of adiponectin, and these results support potential benefits of fish oil consumption on glucose control and fat cell metabolism.”

Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) can be found in salmon, flax seed, and walnuts. It is also noted in the study that fish oil supplements can also be used.
