BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – A recent study conducted at the University of Alabama and published in the April 30 issue of Neurology suggests that the Mediterranean diet may be able to lower the risk of developing dementia.

The Mediterranean diet consists of eating fish, chicken, olive oil and other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids while staying away from meats and dairy.

In this study the researchers used data from more than 17,000 participants whose average age was 64. The participants took tests that measured their memory and thinking (cognitive) skills.

The investigators found that those who followed the Mediterranean diet were 19 percent less likely to develop thinking and memory problems

According to lead researcher Dr. Georgios Tsivgoulis:

“Greater adherence to Mediterranean diet was associated with lower risk of incident cognitive impairment in this large population-based study.”
