NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT — A new study conducted at Yale University and published in Environmental Health Perspective has linked exposure to two common perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) with osteoarthritis.

PFCs are used in more than 200 industrial processes and consumer products including certain stain and water-resistant fabrics, personal care products, paper food containers and a lot of other items. PFCs have quickly become known for being harmful contaminates of humans and wildlife.

Researchers from the study analyzed data from subjects since 2003 showing age, income and race. The study shows the subjects in the highest 25% of exposure to PFCs had about double the odds of having osteoarthritis compared to those in the lowest 25% of exposure.

Lead researcher, Sarah Uhl says:

“We found that PFOA (perfluorooctanoic) and PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic) exposures are associated with higher prevalence of osteoarthritis…”

In order to reduce your intake of household chemicals, Nena Baker, author of “The Body Toxic”, offers her expert tips:

· Filter drinking water

· Read the ingredients in household cleaning products; avoid words like “paraben” and/or “phthalate”

· Avoid microwave popcorn- the inside of the bag has perfluorinated paper

· Avoid stain resistant treatments for clothes and furniture

· Limit use of canned food and plastic containers

Have a healthy day,
