Smaller Snacks are Just as Satisfying as Larger Snacks

ITHACA, NEW YORK – A new study conducted at Cornell University and published in Food, Quality and Preference suggests eating smaller snack portions is likely to satisfy you just as much as larger snack portions would.

The research explains that by eating smaller snack portions and waiting before continuing to eat a larger serving will still leave you full and content. To keep eating the snacks will over fill the stomach and lead to stomach pains and ultimately weight gain.

The study took 100 adults who were given small and large portions of the same snack. Those who ate large portions consumed 77% more calories than those who ate the smaller portion.

Furthermore, after 15 minutes of eating the snacks, both groups reported lower snack cravings.

Head researcher, Brian Wansink, a professor of economics at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., says:

“This research supports the notion that eating for pleasure — hedonic hunger — is driven more by the availability of foods instead of the food already eaten.” He adds, “Just a bit satisfies, not magnifies, hunger and craving tendencies for snacks.”

If you find that you are consuming extra calories and feeling overly full after snacking, Wansink shares his recommendation: Wait 15 minutes after snacking on a smaller portion of food.

You will likely feel full and will be less likely to overeat.

Have a healthy day,
