Pomegranate Shown to Help with Joint Pain
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA – A new study conducted at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and published in the journal Inflammation suggests pomegranates may be highly effective at reducing inflammation in joints causing arthritis.
The study showed that pomegranates contain mast and basophil cells, both important factors in inflammatory response from the body. The cells play a huge role in breaking down the cartilage that builds up in the joints attributed to this disease.
Researcher and Professor at University of Wisconsin, Madison, Dr. Farrukh Afaq explains:
“The edible part of pomegranate is rich in anthocyanins and hydrolysable tannins. This group of compounds possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties make pomegranate useful for preventing the onset and decreasing the severity of inflammatory arthritis. In addition, pomegranate reduces inflammatory-related cartilage breakdown in arthritis.”
Pomegranate delays the onset and severity of joint inflammation, according to the study.
Existing research suggests that by adding pomegranate fruit or 100 percent pomegranate juice to your daily diet may help joint pain and arthritis-related inflammation.
