DENVER – New research conducted at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and published in the journal Cancer Letters suggests that a dietary supplement called grape seed extract (GSE) is effective in inhibiting the growth of colorectal cancer cells.

The research team conducted a study on colorectal cancer cell lines which represented several stages of the disease. They concluded that not only does GSE inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer cells, but the more advanced the colorectal cancer cells are, the more grape seed extract stops their growth and survival.

Additionally, they also observed that not only does grape seed extract target the cancer cells effectively, it also leaves healthy cells alone.

According to researcher, Molly Derry:

“We’ve known for quite a while that the bioactive compounds in grape seed extract selectively target many types of cancer cells. This study shows that many of the same mutations that allow colorectal cancer cells to metastasize and survive traditional therapies make them especially sensitive to treatment with GSE.”

Grape seed extract may also offer other significant health benefits. For instance according to WebMD:

“There’s strong evidence that grape seed extract is beneficial for a number of cardiovascular conditions. Grape seed extract may help with a type of poor circulation (chronic venous insufficiency) and high cholesterol. Grape seed extract also reduces swelling caused by injury and helps with eye disease related to diabetes.”

With this new protective potential against colorectal cancer and its other established health benefits, you might want to inquire if grape seed extract is a dietary supplement that could be right for you.
