Protecting Yourself From the Current Flu Epidemic
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevent has issued a statement advising citizens of the following:
“People at particular risk for the flu and its complications are pregnant women, those 65 and older and anyone with a chronic illness. This season there has been what is considered to be an epidemic of people contracting the flu and requiring emergency medical services.”
Besides getting a vaccination, below are precautions that can help you reduce your risk of getting the flu which can have very serious consequences including death:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and hot water
- Avoid touching your hands with your face
- Avoid touching surfaces such as door handles, hand rails, countertops or at least when you can’t carry disinfectant spray and clean your hands afterwards.
- Cover your nose and mouth with the crook of your elbow when coughing or sneezing and when possible keep your distance from others who are coughing or sneezing.
Since there have been 18 flu-related deaths of children so far and about 2,300 people have been hospitalized since Oct. 1, according to the CDC it is important to take these precautions.
