Reduce Inflammation and Improve Heart Health

LOS ANGELES – New research conducted by UCLA and published in the journal Food and Function indicates that eating fresh avocados with other foods can enhance nutrient absorption.

In the study the researchers found that when fresh Hass avocado was eaten with burger, a protein called Interleukin-6 (IL-6) which is a measure for inflammation was reduced by approximately 30% compared with subjects that just ate the burger.

Additionally, the team also found that the subjects that ate both the avocado and burger had significantly better peripheral arterial blood flow (PAT) than the burger only group. PAT is the movement of blood to different parts of the body and is considered to be a predictor of vascular health.

According to lead investigator David Heber, MD, PhD:

“After eating a burger with one-half of a fresh medium Hass avocado, some of the after-meal effects observed after eating the plain burger, specifically inflammation and narrowing blood vessels, were reduced within hours, and triglycerides did not increase beyond what was observed after eating the burger alone.”
