Belly Fat Tied to Weak Bones for Men
BOSTON – Research conducted at Harvard Medical School and presented November 28 at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America suggests that excess belly fat may be linked to decreased bone strength.
The researchers explained that visceral fat (belly fat) is considered to be particularly dangerous because in recent studies it has been associated with health issues like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high cholesterol, asthma, and sleep apnea.
However this latest study is one of the first to quantify an increased risk to men of osteoporosis associated with visceral fat. The researchers used 35 male subjects who underwent a CT of the abdomen and thigh.
The team used the test to determine fat and muscle mass levels. Additionally, they used a very high resolution CT of the forearm and a technique called finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate bone strength and to predict fracture risk.
The researchers concluded that those men with more visceral fat had lower bone strength based on measuring two factors: lower failure load and stiffness.
According to researcher, Miriam Bredella, M.D:
“We were not surprised by our results that abdominal and visceral fat are detrimental to bone strength in obese men. We were, however, surprised that obese men with a lot of visceral fat had significantly decreased bone strength compared to obese men with low visceral fat but similar BMI.”
