Healthy Habits Help Prevent Memory Loss

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA—A recent study conducted at UCLA and published in the journal International Psychogeriatrics found that people with healthy habits have a lower risk of memory loss.

It is noted that healthy eating, not smoking and regular exercise are linked to better memory and thinking skills.

The study included 18,552 participants. The participants were asked five questions regarding their memory and lifestyle. The five questions were:

  • Do you smoke?
  • Did you eat healthy all day yesterday?
  • In the last week, how many days did you have five or more servings of fruit or vegetables?
  • In the last week, how many days did you exercise for 30 minutes or more?
  • Do you have any problems with your memory?

The team found that people who only engaged in one healthy behavior were 21% less likely to report memory problems. People who engaged in two or more healthy activities were 45% less likely to report memory problems, and finally people who engaged in more than three healthy behaviors were even more less likely to report memory problems.

Soup Can Fight Off Weight Gain

IOWA—A recent study conducted at Iowa State University and published in Plos One found that people who eat soup are less likely to be overweight.

The study analyzed data collected by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2003 and 2006. They studied data from approximately 4,158 adults in the United States. They looked at the connection between soup consumption and risk of being overweight.

The team found after their analysis that soup consumption was associated with a lower body-mass index, and waist circumference. In addition, they found that those who consumed soup regularly had a reduced risk of being overweight, compared to those who said they had not eaten soup in the last 12 months. The researchers noted that these results are likely due to the ability of soup to keep you feeling full for long periods of time.

According to the lead author, James Hollis:

“Soup is a satiating food. Accordingly, these findings suggest that increased soup consumption can help manage body weight.”

Coffee Fights off Diabetes

DENMARK—A recent study conducted at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark and published in the Journal of Natural Products found that coffee might prevent type-2 diabetes.

It is noted that 1 in 10 Americans are diabetic, and more than half of American adults drink coffee daily.

The study analyzed several previous studies that looked at coffees ability to prevent or slow the onset of type-2 diabetes. The researchers focused on the benefits of the different compounds found in coffee.

The team found two significant compounds found within coffee, cafestol and caffeic acid that helps increase insulin production. In addition, cafestol was found to also increase the consumption of glucose into muscles at a similar rate as current diabetic drugs.

According to study author, Soren Gregersen:

“This newly demonstrated dual action of cafestol suggests that cafestol may contribute to the preventive effects on type 2 diabetes in coffee drinkers.”

However, please keep in mind that according to webMD the recommended amount of coffee for an adult is about 3 cups per day.

CALIFORNIA—A recent study conducted at the University of California found several foods that are considered to be healthy snack foods, and provide many health benefits.

The study analyzed several previous studies that looked at different snack foods and found 4 that provided great health benefits, which include:

1. Popcorn: Studies have shown that popcorn helps prevent heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Specifically, a previous study showed that whole grain popcorn helped reduce insulin levels by 10 percent, which helps prevent and control diabetes.

2. Fruits and vegetables: Substituting these instead of an unhealthy snack could significantly lower the risk of obesity, which could increase your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.

3. Nuts: These are considered a super-food, due to the high levels of nutrients and fiber. Studies have shown that those who eat nuts twice or more a week were 50 percent less likely to die from a heart attack. In addition, peanuts have been shown to help control blood sugar and hunger.

4. Yogurt (low or non-fat): Studies have shown that yogurt provides good bacteria for digestion, in addition to being high in protein and calcium.

GEORIGA—A recent study conducted at Georgia State University and published in the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology found foods high in soluble fiber fights weight gain.

It is noted that soluble fiber absorbs water in the gut, which forms a gel-like substance that attaches to cholesterol, helping eliminate them from the body, which helps lower cholesterol levels. The gel-like substance has also been shown to slow digestion and regulate blood sugar.

The study analyzed a group of mice, it is noted that their bodily functions are very similar to humans. The mice were fed a series of diets that varied in levels of soluble and insoluble fiber, proteins, and fats. The researchers studied how each diet impacted their fat accumulation, weight gain, and other health factors.

The team found that the mice that were given a diet high in soluble fibers had significantly lower weight gain, and less fat accumulation, compared to those who were fed a diet that lacked soluble fiber.

According to the researchers, the following foods are rich in soluble fiber:

· Oat bran and barley

· Nuts, seeds and beans

· Lentils and peas

· Fruits and veggies (apples, blueberries and carrots)
