Overeating May Cause Memory Impairment
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA– A new study coming from the Mayo Clinic indicates that older people who overeat are at a much greater risk of memory impairment.
In the study researchers had over 1200 subjects between 70 and 89 years old.
The subjects food consumption was broken down into 3 categories:
- Lowest Consumption: 600 and 1,525 calories a day
- Medium Consumption: 1,526 and 2,142 calories a day
- Highest Consumption: 2,143 and 6,000 calories a day
Among those who ate the most, the odds of being diagnosed with the impaired-memory disorder was more than twice that of those who ate the least, the researchers found.
The researchers also noted that these findings remained the same after taking into account a history of stroke, diabetes, education, and other risk factors for memory loss.
While they aren’t sure what may cause the memory loss the researchers susupect that the excessive caloric intake may lead to oxidative damage leading to structural changes in the brain.
With the alarming rate of elderly people developing memory impairment, this study gives you another good reason to consider keeping your caloric intake to a sensible level.
