Fruit Lowers Stroke Risk by 19%

Eating citrus fruit, such as oranges and grapefruit, may lower your risk of stroke

EAST ANGLIA, ENGLAND – A study conducted at the Norwich Medical School suggests that eating citrus fruit may protect against stroke.

The researchers focused on compounds called flavanones present in citrus fruits. Flavanones are a type of dietary flavonoid already associated with lower stroke risk. Besides fruits and vegetables, flavonoids are found in red wine and dark chocolate.

The study was large with nearly 70,000 subjects. The results were that subjects who ate the most flavanones (more than 470 milligrams)  had a 19 percent lower risk of blood-clot related stroke than those who ate the least (no more than 150 milligrams).

To give some idea, a typical piece of citrus fruit contains 45 to 50 milligrams of flavanones according to researchers.

Additionally, they also found that 95 percent of the flavanones consumed came from mostly oranges and grapefruits.

“These data provide strong support for consuming more citrus fruits as part of your daily fruit and vegetable intake” said study leader Aedin Cassidy.

Their speculation is that the flavanones in citrus fruits improve blood vessel function or reduce inflammation both of which are linked with stroke.

The researchers also noted that whole fruits provide more benefits than juice because they contain more flavanones and no added sugar.

While researchers note that this study was conducted with female subjects they believe that men would also derive similar health benefits from the citrus intake.

With these significant numbers you may want to make sure to add some citrus fruit to your diet to protect against stroke.

Stress Can Age Your Body on a Cellular Level

Stress can cause cellular aging which may lead to strokes, heart attack or cancer.

SAN FRANCISCO – A new study scheduled to be published in the May issue of the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity suggests that stress can actually cause cellular aging.

In this study researchers examined cellular age by measuring telomeres, which are the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes. Short telomeres index older cellular age and are associated with increased risk for a host of chronic diseases of aging, including cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The study had 50 female subjects and the researchers examined them when they anticipated stress events such as public speaking. This tendency to anticipate stress put them at increased risk for short telomeres. Based on that, the researchers propose that higher levels of anticipated threat in daily life may promote cellular aging in chronically stressed individuals.

Branco Weiss Fellow at UCSF who is the lead author of the study said, “our findings are preliminary for now, but they suggest that the major forms of stress in your life may influence how you respond to more minor forms of stress, such as losing your keys, getting stuck in traffic or leading a meeting at work.”

While this study is preliminary the researchers say that it’s a good indication that stress can age your body on a cellular level.

With this study adding to the large number of studies indicating the negative health affects of stress, it gives you a good reason to consider trying to find ways to reduce the stress in your life.

Fish May Protect Intestinal Lining

Eating fish high in Omega 3 may help reduce inflammation and the formation of colon polyps

By Marlith, via Wikimedia Commons

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – A new study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that eating at least three servings of fish a week may reduce the risk of developing some types of colon polyps.

Colon polyps are small growths on the intestinal lining that may develop into cancer. Previous research has suggested a link between inflammation and formation of colon polyps.

The researchers who conducted the study at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center speculate that it is the Omega-3 fats in fish that may reduce inflammation and help protect against the development of colon polyps.

This was a large study of more than 5,300 people. The researchers found that those subjects that ate at least three servings of fish a week were 33 percent less likely to develop colon polyps, and also had lower levels of an inflammation-related hormone called prostaglandin E2.

“That was the aspect of the study we were particularly excited about because prostaglandin E2 is known to be associated with adenomas or polyps in colorectal cancers,” first author Dr. Harvey Murff, an associate professor of medicine, said in a Vanderbilt University Medical Center news release.

While this particular study used women subjects, the researchers note that men would also likely receive health benefits from the Omega -3 in fish.

With colorectal cancer being the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, you might want to consider making fish a regular part of your diet.
